Lucy Childers is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Integrated Strategic Communication, with an emphasis in Public Relations, from the University of Kentucky. She will be graduating in August of 2021 and plans to pursue a career in Crisis Public Relations or Event Planning. She is a Public Relations Intern for the Public Relations team at KW Commercial 889-9898 with Russell Bernstein, CBI.
Lucy was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky where she now attends the University of Kentucky. Throughout high school, Lucy participated in many clubs and organizations but the two most impactful roles she held were being the President of the Pep Club and the author of an advice column entitled, Love Lucy. During her two consecutive terms as the President of Pep Club, Lucy discovered her passion for event planning and public relations, as she was responsible for planning and executing many school-wide events. Writing an advice column for her school’s online newspaper, “The Jacket Journal”, transformed Lucy’s perspective on the world and those around her. She originally pitched the idea of an advice column to the editor of the paper in order to provide a safe and anonymous place for students to share their problems and ask for advice. While writing for the column, Lucy was able to see into the lives of her peers. This experience was the driving force behind Lucy’s desire to document and share the stories of others.
While at the University of Kentucky, Lucy has remained an active member of her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. She currently holds several positions such as Senior Risk Management Representative, Secretary, Recognition Chair and MyJourney Representative. Although these roles differ in their purposes, they have all given Lucy the opportunity to strengthen her event planning and leadership skills and build connections throughout her chapter and the UK community. Alpha Chi Omega’s national philanthropy is domestic violence awareness. The Delta Omega chapter is heavily involved with their local philanthropy, GreenHouse17, which is a safe haven for women and children escaping intimate partner abuse while they are striving to get back on their feet. Lucy has not only been able to raise financial and material donations for GreenHouse17 during her time with Alpha Chi Omega, but she has also had the opportunity to work with these women personally on several occasions volunteering at the GreenHouse17 location. One of Lucy’s favorite volunteering experiences she has had in college was holding the role as a Coach for Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run is a program for girls grades 3-5 that emphasizes self-awareness, emotional intelligence, how to respectfully and kindly treat others, and living healthy lifestyle.
In her free time, Lucy enjoys watching real-crime movies and tv shows, spending time with her family and friends, traveling to new places, and attempting various DIY projects. Lucy is excited to gain more experiences and new skills in the Public Relations internship at KW Commercial.
